It was the 80s but I'm I'm not sure which year specifically. David Beal and I had done a recording together called the Big Picture which was all done with pads triggering drum samples. The pads were Roland pads. We did a few performances and in rehearsals for one in New York we were talking about the current scene of rap music or hip-hop and at the time it was it was a thing going on called New Jack Swing, and it was a new take on swing; it was like swing hip-hop. Teddy Riley was king of that style. So we came up with the idea of doing our version of drummer Cozy Cole's 1950s hit Topsy Pt 2. and the beat would be programmed by David, who was masterful at that (among many other things)and I would play the solo. He produced it. I think he did a great job. That's the gist of the story about this song. Hope you like it
